Private legal practitioner Ken Kuranchie has expressed relief over the condition of Bernard Antwi-Boasiako, popularly known as Chairman Wontumi, following a conversation with the former New Patriotic Party (NPP) Ashanti Regional Chairman while in custody.
Mr Kuranchie, who describes Wontumi as a longtime friend, said he was pleased with his friend’s physical appearance and general well-being despite his detention in connection with the Ghana Export-Import Bank (EXIM Bank) case.
The lawyer’s comments followed a conversation lasting more than 30 minutes with Wontumi before the case was called in court.
Speaking to Citi News after the proceedings, Mr Kuranchie said Wontumi appeared to be in good condition, expressing happiness at having the opportunity to see him.
“He looks well, strong and clean. When you are in prison, that is the best thing you can hope for. He looks absolutely well. I am glad I saw him,” he said.
Wontumi, dressed in a white shirt and black trousers, appeared cheerful as he exchanged pleasantries with his legal team and supporters who had gathered at the court to show solidarity.
His appearance and interaction with those present came as he continued to face legal proceedings over allegations involving funds from EXIM Bank.
Wontumi pleads not guilty in EXIM Bank case
The former NPP regional chairman has pleaded not guilty to charges relating to the alleged fraudulent acquisition of GH¢14.3 million from EXIM Bank for a proposed large-scale farming project.
The case centres on allegations concerning the acquisition of the funds intended to support the agricultural venture.
Wontumi’s plea means the allegations remain subject to determination through the judicial process.
Mr Kuranchie’s remarks focused on his friend’s condition in custody, rather than the substantive allegations before the court.
The proceedings are continuing as the case moves through the legal process.
