The Ashanti Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Bernard Antwi Boasiako, popularly known as Chairman Wontumi, has formally declared his ambition to contest for the party’s National Chairman position, arguing that leadership should be judged by performance and strategy rather than fluency in English.
Addressing party supporters in the Western Region ahead of the NPP’s national executive elections slated for September 2026, Wontumi positioned himself as a results-driven leader with deep grassroots appeal and a proven record within the party’s ranks.
He dismissed suggestions that eloquence in English should be a benchmark for leadership, insisting that political success depends on effective mobilisation, strategic planning and connection with ordinary party members.
“Don’t judge me by my English. Judge me by my competence… Judge me by the strategies I can put in place to win the 2028 elections,” he told the gathering, emphasizing that effective campaigning often requires engaging voters in local languages rather than formal English.
Wontumi underscored his experience and longstanding involvement in party activities, stating that his practical understanding of the party’s base gives him an edge as the NPP prepares for the 2028 general elections.
His declaration comes as the NPP begins its internal reorganisation process, with a nationwide member registration exercise scheduled from March 1 to 31, paving the way for the September polls to elect new national executives.
