A member of Bernard Antwi Boasiako’s legal team has launched a scathing critique of Deputy Attorney General Justice Srem Sai, accusing him of undermining the integrity of Ghana’s legal process by politicising an ongoing investigation.
Enoch Afoakwah, speaking on AsaasePa 107.3 FM’s Atumpan programme on Thursday, took issue with a recent Facebook post by the Deputy AG, in which Srem Sai detailed allegations against the New Patriotic Party (NPP) Ashanti Regional Chairman—popularly known as Chairman Wontumi. The Deputy AG’s post referenced serious offences including fraud, money laundering, and links to international organised crime.
Afoakwah said the statement was not only inappropriate but also deeply troubling coming from a senior government legal officer. “It smacks of political interference,” he argued. “As Deputy Attorney-General, he should act with restraint and professionalism, not play to the gallery.”
The lawyer questioned whether Justice Srem Sai had been fully briefed by the relevant investigative bodies—particularly the Criminal Investigations Department (CID)—before making such sweeping claims public.
“He may not have the full facts, or worse, he’s trying to score political points,” Afoakwah suggested, adding that such public commentary could compromise the fairness of the legal process.
Afoakwah described the allegations as “baseless” and reaffirmed that Chairman Wontumi denies all wrongdoing. He warned that public statements like those made by the Deputy AG only inflame tensions and violate the presumption of innocence.
“This is not justice; this is political strategy in disguise,” he said. “Wontumi’s fundamental rights are being trampled, and every Ghanaian who believes in due process should be alarmed.”
Wontumi has been held by the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO) for more than 48 hours after failing to meet a GHS50 million bail condition, sparking protests by NPP MPs and supporters. The party’s parliamentary caucus staged a dramatic sit-in outside EOCO’s Accra offices earlier Thursday.
As public pressure mounts, Wontumi’s legal team has vowed to challenge what they see as an orchestrated campaign to criminalise a prominent political figure.
