Aide to the New Patriotic Party’s flagbearer, Dennis Miracles Aboagye, has suggested that the Greater Accra Regional Minister, Linda Ocloo, should consider stepping down following public backlash over recent comments about postings in Ghana’s public service.
The controversy stems from remarks attributed to the Minister suggesting that assignments to northern parts of the country could be interpreted as punitive. The statement sparked widespread criticism before she issued an apology, describing it as an unintended communication lapse that did not reflect government policy or her personal views.
However, speaking on Breakfast Daily on Wednesday, May 6, Miracles Aboagye argued that the issue goes beyond an apology and raises questions about leadership conduct in public office.
He acknowledged that the Minister may have made contributions in her role but suggested that it might be appropriate for her to “make way for others” who can better manage public communication and foster unity.
According to him, holders of public office must exercise greater caution in their public statements and avoid frequent media exposure that could lead to miscommunication or controversy.
He further criticised what he described as a pattern of “unguarded remarks,” warning that such behaviour is not helpful to governance and public trust.
Miracles Aboagye also stressed that in situations where public statements attract backlash, simple apologies are not sufficient, adding that leadership should reflect deeper accountability and restraint.
The comments add to ongoing public debate surrounding the Minister’s remarks and broader expectations of communication standards among government officials.
