Veteran journalist and political commentator, Mr. Kwesi Pratt Jnr, has thrown his weight behind the current leadership of the Ghana Journalists Association (GJA), signaling strong support for their re-election ahead of the Association’s June 30, 2025 polls.
Describing the election as “nothing more than a formality,” Mr. Pratt, Managing Editor of The Insight newspaper, commended the incumbent executives—led by President Albert Kwabena Dwumfour—for what he called a remarkable track record over the past three years.
“I’m impressed by the current executives. In fact, they’ve done everything I expected of them, and in some cases, exceeded my expectations,” Mr. Pratt stated in a post widely shared on social media.
He pointed specifically to achievements such as the refurbishment of the International Press Centre, improved training opportunities for journalists, and advocacy for both press freedom and journalist welfare.
With 62 candidates contesting various positions across both national and regional levels, the GJA elections are expected to be competitive. Thirteen individuals have been cleared for six national executive roles, including both incumbents and challengers.
Despite the stakes, Mr. Pratt’s endorsement suggests a significant vote of confidence in the current administration, especially at a time when leadership stability and industry support are seen as crucial for safeguarding media freedoms and improving professional standards.
Among those seeking re-election are President Albert Kwabena Dwumfour and General Secretary Dominic Hlordzi. Others contesting include Mary Tawiah Mensah, Rebecca Ekpe (incumbent Vice President), and aspirants vying for Organising Secretary, Treasurer, and Public Affairs Officer positions.
Mr. Pratt’s intervention could prove influential, given his stature in the media landscape. As one of Ghana’s most outspoken media veterans, his remarks are expected to resonate with members as they head to the polls.
