Ghana came together in solemn remembrance on Friday, August 15, as the nation honoured eight fallen service members of the August 6 military helicopter crash with an inter-faith state funeral at Independence Square.
The ceremony, attended by President John Dramani Mahama, senior government officials, the military high command, and grieving families, was marked by both grief and pride as the country reflected on the sacrifice of its heroes.
Among the tributes was a poignant moment when President Mahama conferred posthumous promotions on three Ghana Air Force personnel, recognising their exceptional service and devotion to duty. Squadron Leader Peter Bafemi Anala was promoted to Wing Commander, Flying Officer Manin Twum-Ampadu to Flight Lieutenant, and Sergeant Ernest Addo Mensah to Flight Sergeant.
Describing the tragedy as “a great loss to the nation,” the President said the officers’ names would forever be etched in Ghana’s military history. “They died in the line of duty, serving with honour, courage, and professionalism,” he affirmed, pledging continued government support for the bereaved families.
The event, filled with military honours and prayers from Christian, Muslim, and traditional leaders, became a powerful reminder of unity in loss — a day when political, ethnic, and social divisions gave way to collective mourning and respect for service to the nation.
