Broadcaster and New Patriotic Party (NPP) communicator Richard Nana Basoah, popularly known as “Papa Rich,” has regained his freedom after being detained by operatives of the National Signals Bureau (NSB).
Basoah, who serves as the NPP communicator for the Asante Akim South Constituency and hosts the evening drive programme on Ahwenepa 95.5 FM in Juaso, was taken into custody on Tuesday, August 4, shortly after completing his radio programme.
According to a statement issued by Ahwenepa FM, armed men arrived at the station in two black Toyota Land Cruiser vehicles and took the broadcaster away. The station later confirmed that the men were operatives of the NSB.
The reasons for his detention have not been publicly disclosed.
His release followed interventions by several individuals, including NPP leaders, legal representatives and directors of Ahwenepa FM.
Those involved in securing his release included Prof. Ken Attafuah, Joyce Attafuah, former Ghana Post Managing Director Bice Osei Kuffour (Obour), and lawyer Enoch Afoakwa.
The radio station said Basoah has been asked to report to the NSB on Thursday, August 6, accompanied by his legal team, led by Prof. Attafuah and Lawyer Afoakwa, to assist with the bureau’s ongoing processes.
Ahwenepa FM thanked supporters, media colleagues and members of the public who showed concern during the period of his detention.
The station also reaffirmed its commitment to the rule of law, media freedom and the protection of constitutional rights.
The incident has attracted public attention, with calls from some quarters for greater transparency regarding the circumstances surrounding Basoah’s detention.
