Former Assin Central MP, Kennedy Agyapong, has bowed out of the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) nationwide ‘Thank You Tour’ following a violent clash in Kumasi that left one of his supporters injured. The move, while surprising to some, has been widely praised by party leaders as a bold step to safeguard unity and de-escalate tensions.
Agyapong cited rising security threats to his followers after a brutal altercation at the Kumasi event led to a stabbing incident involving a student performer from KNUST contracted by his team. According to his camp, the violence erupted after armed men—allegedly linked to the NPP—intervened in a dispute over money gifted to performers, triggering chaos marked by gunfire and a stabbing.
In response to the incident, Agyapong issued a statement withdrawing from the tour, stressing that his continued presence risked further inflaming tensions.
Reacting to the development, NPP Director of Communications, Richard Ahiagbah, commended Agyapong’s decision, describing it as “noble” and necessary to preserve the tour’s purpose.
“He has made a selfless move by stepping aside for the greater good,” Ahiagbah said on Eyewitness News. “His withdrawal allows the party to refocus on expressing gratitude to the Ghanaian people, rather than being overshadowed by internal conflict.”
Ahiagbah urged party members to emulate Agyapong’s example, emphasizing that maintaining unity is crucial as the party regroups after its 2024 electoral defeat.
