The New Patriotic Party (NPP) has been hit with an unexpected leadership shake-up in the Mion Constituency following the resignation of Constituency Chairman Sulaiman Abubakar, barely two weeks after he was elected to the position.
Mr. Abubakar announced his resignation with immediate effect in a letter dated Saturday, August 8, 2026, addressed to the Northern Regional Chairman of the party.
Although he did not disclose the specific reasons for stepping down, he described the decision as a personal one.
“My resignation is personal,” he wrote.
The resignation comes shortly after Mr. Abubakar emerged victorious in the party’s constituency elections, making his departure a surprising development for the local party leadership.
In his letter, he thanked the Council of Elders, patrons, polling station executives, electoral area executives, party members, and supporters in the constituency for the trust and support they extended to him during his tenure.
Despite stepping down as constituency chairman, Mr. Abubakar reaffirmed his commitment to the NPP, stressing that he remains a loyal member of the party.
“I remain an ardent and good-standing member of the party and will continue to discharge my role as a member to ensure we recapture power in 2028,” he stated.
He also wished the constituency leadership success in its future activities and indicated that he would continue to maintain contact with the party.
The resignation leaves the Mion Constituency without a substantive chairman and is expected to prompt internal discussions on the party’s leadership arrangements in the constituency.
