The New Patriotic Party (NPP) has vehemently denounced the suspension of Chief Justice Torkornoo, calling the move an unprecedented and unconstitutional attack on Ghana’s democratic principles.
During the first day of the NPP’s nationwide “Thank You Tour” on Wednesday, 23 April 2025, General Secretary Justin Kodua Frimpong addressed supporters at the party’s headquarters in Asylum Down, Accra, delivering a passionate critique of President John Mahama’s decision. Kodua stated that the suspension of the Chief Justice was an affront to the constitution and a significant blow to the country’s democratic institutions.
“This is a bad day for Ghana,” Kodua declared. “We are witnessing a direct assault on the very foundations of our democracy. This is something that has never happened in the history of the Fourth Republic.” The General Secretary emphasized that the suspension occurred despite a petition challenging the legality of the process that was still pending at the Supreme Court, raising concerns about the president’s disregard for due process and the rule of law.
Kodua urged civil society organizations and the Ghana Bar Association to unite in publicly condemning the suspension, calling the president’s actions politically motivated and undemocratic. “This is not the Ghana we want,” he added. “We expect the president to respect the law and let the judicial process unfold rather than take unconstitutional actions for political gain.”
In a candid moment, Kodua also addressed past failures of the NPP government, acknowledging shortcomings during their tenure while expressing regret for any disappointments. “We didn’t get everything right, but we gave it our best effort,” he said, vowing to learn from past mistakes. “We are sorry for any disappointments.”
The NPP General Secretary also promised to hold the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC) government accountable, with plans to soon reveal the true state of the nation’s economy in a forthcoming press conference. “In a few weeks, we will hold a press conference to give Ghanaians the real picture of our economic situation,” Kodua said.
Kodua concluded his remarks with a call for unity and reconciliation, both within the NPP and across the country. “For the sake of unity, I have forgiven those who have wronged me,” he declared, urging party members to set aside differences and work together for the 2028 elections.
The NPP’s General Secretary ended with a stark warning: “Our democracy is under attack. Our judiciary is under attack. The suspension of Chief Justice Torkornoo is not just an attack on her, but on the entire judiciary. We will not stand idly by. Expect massive protests. We will fight for our constitution and our democracy.”
