Media personality Okatakyie Afrifa-Mensah has raised concerns over what he describes as a breach of presidential protocol, following a viral video showing businessman Ibrahim Mahama driving President John Mahama during an official visit to flood-affected areas in the Volta Region.
Speaking on his show, For The Records, Afrifa-Mensah criticized the act as inappropriate and unbefitting of proper governance structures. He argued that while influential individuals may have close ties to government, such public displays of involvement should be avoided.
“If you are a wealthy individual, stay in your space and enjoy your wealth. We know that, by all means, you will benefit from the government and exert some control, but let it not be so blatant,” he stated.
Afrifa-Mensah further pointed out that the president has a designated team of official drivers, questioning why a family member would assume such a role.
“The president has not fewer than three drivers. The practice has been that, ordinarily, the president’s driver is not even supposed to be driving him. But from Atta Mills through Mahama to Akufo-Addo, they have enrolled their private drivers into the service,” he noted.
His comments echo similar sentiments shared by some Ghanaians on social media, who have expressed disapproval of the situation. Afrifa-Mensah suggested that if Ibrahim Mahama were to continue in this role, his status should be formalized.
“If you think Ibrahim Mahama is the one who should be driving you, let us know and officially enroll him as your chauffeur,” he added.
The incident has sparked a broader debate on political influence, governance protocols, and the separation of personal and official roles within government.
